Minivan times & tickets – Phnom Penh to Poipet

There are two main reasons foreign visitors go to Poipet: to visit the casinos or on their way to or from Thailand. Gambling is illegal in Thailand so people come from Thailand to gamble in this border town, which has a seedy reputation as a consequence. If you are coming here from Phnom Penh most likely it is because you plan to travel to Thailand. At the moment you cannot travel from Phnom Penh to Poipet, or Poipet to Thailand, by train. Trains stopped running between Cambodia and Thailand in 1946 and the railway line from Phnom Penh has been so badly maintained that trains stopped running on it in 2009. This, however, is all set to change. A railway connection between Poipet and Aranyaprathet in Thailand is near to completion and the Phnom Penh to Poipet line is being renovated. For the moment you need to take a bus or minivan if you want to travel from Phnom Penh to Poipet.

Once you have passed through immigration you arrive in Thailand on the main road near to the Rong Kluea Border Market. From there you need to travel a further 6.5 km to Aranyaprathet town centre to catch a bus or train to Bangkok. Bus services from Aranyaprathet tend to be quicker on this route than train services to Bangkok. There are two ‘ordinary’ trains a day from Arnayapathet to Bangkok. Ordinary trains in Thailand are 3rd class fan cooled seat only trains which stop on route at every small station (42 to precise before you reach Bangkok) and are often delayed. On the rail route between Aranyaprathet and Bangkok even the most avid train enthusiasts would find this journey tiresome; trains often arrive several hours after they are scheduled to and stop frequently for little apparent reason.
